If you look closely at the time display, you'll see the original grid of the display as originally built in 1950. It was originally a 12 x 18 grid, then by 1960 was reduced to a 6 x 9 grid.
P.S. When originally put into service in 1950, the clock had 569 bulbs on each side, or 2,276 total. Around 1960-61 the wiring was rearranged and the bulb count slashed to 130 per side (520 total). I.M.H.O., the current layout doesn't do anything for me. I noticed the bulb count on that clock is now 467 per side, or 1,868 total.
